How the calculation works

For each round, the World Handicap System turns your score into a Score Differential:

Estimated differential = (113 ÷ Slope) × (Adjusted score − Course Rating)

Your Handicap Index is then the average of your best differentials. Once you have 20 rounds on record it uses your best 8. With fewer rounds it uses a sliding scale — fewer of your best scores, plus a small adjustment — so you can still get a fair provisional number from as few as three.

Course Rating and Slope Rating are printed on the scorecard or tee information. Use your adjusted gross score after applying the handicap rules for the maximum score allowed on each hole.

This is an estimate, not an official Handicap Index. It assumes the Playing Conditions Calculation is zero and cannot apply exceptional-score reductions, committee adjustments, or the soft and hard caps because those require your full official scoring history.

How is a golf handicap calculated?

Each round gives a Score Differential based on adjusted gross score, Course Rating, Slope Rating and any Playing Conditions Calculation adjustment. This estimator assumes a PCC of zero and then averages the number of low differentials required for the size of your scoring record.

How many rounds do I need for a handicap?

You can get a provisional Handicap Index from as few as 3 rounds. The World Handicap System uses a sliding scale: with fewer than 20 rounds it averages fewer of your best differentials and applies a small adjustment.
